Old Photos

Early photo restoration Deborah Niland
I've been having a great time looking at and sorting photos from the family collections.  Some of these photos need a lot of restoration because of fading, marks, and damage due to age and fragility.

I found this one of my mother when she was a little girl.  I have restored it quite a bit but it still needs a lot of work.  It is such a sweet photo.

What a beautiful child she was...a lovely photograph, Deborah - quite stunning.

You had me tricked there for a while...I thought I was going crazy!!lol I thought I saw movement...then...I knew I did! How did you do that?

I already know I'm crazy without you confirming it even further! ;)

I'm glad you did a double-take! I wanted the changes to be subtle enough for a viewer to think any movement might be imagined initially. I've been doing some experimentation to get these effects.

It's wonderful what you achieved with the photo, Deborah.

It's such a beautiful photo...quite stunning, actually. I couldn't take my eyes off it. She was such a beautiful little girl. And looking at her later photos, your mother was a beautiful-looking woman, too.

Your father was a very handsome man, as well.

It was only after our exchanging of comments yesterday that the penny dropped in my head...with a loud clang...I'd mentioned your father in my post. It was purely coincidental.

When writing about the Fifties I couldn't help but mention "The Shiralee".

It played a memorable part of my early teenage years. My Mum and Nana insisted on taking me to see the picture when it was released.

I was 13 years old at the time; and it left a lasting impression on me.

It remains one of my favourite books and movies. Last night I was thinking I must read the book again again.

Peter Finch's depiction of Jim Macauley will always, to me, be the best. Every time I think of that character the image of Finch comes with it.

I've just learned that Dana Wilson who played Buster alongside Finch passed away in late March this year.

This year is the 60th anniversary of the publication of The Shiralee.
It has been in print ever since and has enjoyed world wide readership.
My father was very happy with the Peter Finch portrayal of Macauley. I think he would have enjoyed the Bryan Brown version as well.
